ABOUT US
After a chance meeting in a UK pub in 2019 with the owner of Blackforest Valais Blacknose, Sue Harrison purchased 3 embryos. From there foundation progeny of NZ McLeod and NZ Ailsa were born on her lifestyle block near Tai Tapu. These lambs were literally the cutest babies in the world according to Sue!
The foundation flock has steadily increased to 10 ewes. McLeod is working his magic with other flocks, and further bloodlines have been introduced to ensure the conformation and markings of the flock are true to breed. Sue is committed to preserving this rare breed and sharing our knowledge and passion with others. We believe that Valais Blacknose sheep are more than just livestock - they are beloved members of our family and a joy to be around.

BREEDING
Breeding Valais Blacknose sheep can be a rewarding experience, but it requires a lot of knowledge and planning. It's important to choose healthy breeding stock and to follow best practices for breeding, such as proper nutrition, good record-keeping, and careful selection of breeding pairs. Genetics have been combined from top flocks in the UK and NZ, including Alpine, Highland, Snowdonia and Wilnoa Studs. The progeny we are breeding for has good structure, conformation, and markings in the correct places. In addition to all the information about Valais Blacknose sheep, our website also features photos, videos, and stories about these wonderful creatures. HISTORY
Valais Blacknose sheep are a breed of docile mountain large frame sheep that originated in the Valais region of Switzerland, near the Matterhorn. They are easily recognized by their distinctive appearance, which includes long, curly wool, a black face, and impressive spiral horns. Their name is from their long black Roman (curved) nose. They are naturally docile, curious and friendly making them popular as pets and with their distinctive markings they have become known as the ‘cutest sheep in the world’
Valais Blacknose sheep are considered a dual-purpose breed, meaning that they are raised for both their meat and their wool. They are known for their gentle temperament and are often kept as pets or used in hobby farming. Ewes have a distinctive black spot under their tail and can have 2 sets of lambs per year when mature.

The breed is also highly prized for their wool, which is considered to be some of the finest in the world. They are such prolific growers of wool they need shearing twice per year. The wool is soft and has a distinctive curl, making it highly sought after by fibre artists and knitters.
Valais Blacknose sheep are considered a rare breed, and efforts are underway to preserve the breed and increase its numbers. In 2014 they were imported into the UK, then in 2017 to NZ from the UK. In recent years, the breed has gained popularity in the United Kingdom and other countries, and it is estimated there is now over 20,000 Valais Blacknose sheep around the world. The Swiss have closed their borders to exports since 2014, so the top breeding genetics sourced from there is precious.
